“The Dark Rose?” Joseph blinked, stranded at the foot of the table like a naughty school boy, his nervous gaze jerking from his father to the Necromancer and back again. The Lord-Scion hadn’t indicated he could sit.

“She was too sick to attend our dinner.” His mouth took on a sulky droop. “It was a Palimpsestian style banquet too. Cost a small fortune.”

“I enjoyed it very much,” said the Necromancer.

Callaghan drummed his fingers on the table. “Yes, yes, but is she fit for company now?”

Idly, the Necromancer wondered when the Lord-Scion would notice the hint of green in the whites of his son’s eyes. And what he’d do about it. Thinking back, he couldn’t recall having seen them closer together than four or five feet.

Joey said, “She missed the Harte’s ball too.”

The Necromancer frowned. Odd, there should have been an announcement by now, some sort of hue and cry. Who was keeping the doxy’s death quiet—and why?

“The Malones are having a stupid fireworks thing tonight. My man told me he heard she accepted at the last minute.” Joey shrugged plump shoulders. “You know how servants love to gossip.”

The Necromancer leapt out of his chair and hauled Joey onto his tiptoes. “What?” he roared into the younger man’s face. “Impossible!”
